Oxford Cloth vs PVC: Which Inflatable Enclosure Material Wins?

Oxford cloth or PVC tarpaulin. That's the question behind roughly half the emails I get, and it's usually phrased as some version of "the cheap one can't be that bad, right?" Sometimes it isn't. Often it is. Here's the difference between the two materials — including the failures I've photographed — so you only buy this once.
What Oxford Cloth Actually Is
Oxford cloth is a woven fabric — originally cotton, now almost always polyester — with a basket-weave pattern. Multiple warp yarns pass over and under multiple weft yarns, which gives it that soft, checkerboard texture you know from luggage and budget chair covers. In inflatables, the back gets a polyurethane (PU) coating so it holds air and shrugs off a drizzle.
The spec that matters is the denier number — that's the "D" you see in listings. 420D is the entry level you'll find on most budget golf enclosures and batting cages. 600D is the mid-range. 900D+ is where it starts getting genuinely serious.
The honest summary: Oxford cloth is the lightweight option. It weighs around 150–200 g/m for 420D, packs down into a duffel bag one person can carry, and costs meaningfully less. It breathes, too — less condensation on the inside walls than PVC. For a garage setup, a basement bay, or occasional backyard use with foam balls, it's a completely legitimate material.
What PVC Tarpaulin Actually Is
PVC tarpaulin isn't really a fabric in the same sense — it's a polyester mesh sandwiched inside multiple layers of plastic. That's why 0.55mm PVC (the commercial standard, about 18 oz per square yard) weighs 650–750 g/m — three to four times what Oxford cloth weighs. Same stuff they build commercial bounce houses and water slides from. Kids jump on it barefoot, all summer, for a decade.
It's fully waterproof, not water-resistant. It carries UV inhibitors in the coating. It tears slowly, if at all, because the internal mesh stops any rip from running. And when it gets dirty, you wipe it down with soap and a rag — done.

In 2019, two customers in the same town bought the same style of golf enclosure from two different sellers. One was 420D Oxford. One was 0.55mm PVC. Both got left outside through a full summer — same sun, same heat, roughly the same usage. I saw photos of both, and I've kept them, because I use them in exactly this conversation.

- Ground tarp underneath — concrete and gravel are sandpaper to the weave
- Mild soap, cold water, hands only — hot washes and machine cycles kill the PU coating
